August 20th is the date set for International FinOps Day, where the development of the FinOps culture and practice is celebrated. The FinOps Foundation is a project of the Linux Foundation dedicated to empowering and leveraging individuals who practice financial management of cloud resources, aiming to develop, standardize, and disseminate best practices through community engagement and education.
FinOps is a discipline and cultural practice of cloud financial management that enables companies to maximize business value by helping engineering, finance, technology, and business operations teams collaborate on spending decisions based on data.

When it all began… The history of FinOps culture and the FinOps Foundation
According to the book Cloud FinOps, the challenge and dissemination of the culture began to take its first steps around 2010, through the contact of J.R. Storment and Mike Fuller with Adobe and Intuit, pioneering companies in the use of public cloud. Subsequently, other companies such as Atlassian, Qantas, and Tabcorp began to adopt similar cloud financial management practices.
What was once considered merely 'cloud cost management' began to have an identity and definition: FinOps! The term experienced a 'boom' in searches between 2018 and 2022.
During this period, specifically in February 2019, the FinOps Foundation was founded, originating from the Customer Advisory Board of Cloudability. In June 2020, the F2 became part of the Linux Foundation.
The growth of public cloud usage also means an increased demand for skilled professionals to manage cloud resource costs. Currently, a new profession is becoming a trend in the technology market: the FinOps Analyst. Job openings for FinOps professionals are now being identified even among the top 500 companies in Fortune!
History is absolutely fundamental to a people. Those who do not know where they come from do not know where they are going.

In light of everything that has been presented, we have much to celebrate! FinOps is an enjoyable challenge, and currently, the search for qualified professionals to fill market vacancies is only increasing!

The FinOps community itself can collaborate in creating content for everyone and developing projects aimed at standardizing and enhancing the culture and its best practices!
