DoiT Acquires Select
The world of cloud computing is changing. For a long time, managing cloud costs meant watching over basic servers (like EC2). But now, companies are spending huge amounts on data platforms like Snowflake, Databricks, and Google BigQuery.
These platforms are expensive and hard to track. That is why DoiT International has acquired Select (also known as Select.dev), a tool built to fix Snowflake costs.
Data Costs are a “Black Box”
In the past, you paid for a server, and you knew what you got. Now, with tools like Snowflake, you pay for “usage”—how many seconds a query runs or how much data you scan.
This creates a “Black Box.” You get a bill for “credits,” but you don’t know:
- Who spent the money?
- Why did costs spike?
- How can we stop it?
Traditional tools designed for Amazon AWS or Microsoft Azure cannot see inside this box. They only see the total bill.
Select
Select was built to solve this exact problem. It connects directly to Snowflake to see what is happening inside.
Automatic Savings
Most tools just tell you, “You should make this smaller.” Select actually does it for you.
- Smart Resizing: It watches your work. If a data warehouse is too big for the job, Select shrinks it.
- Auto-Suspend: In Snowflake, you pay if the system is running, even if it’s waiting. Select turns it off faster when it’s idle, saving money instantly.
Real Money, Not “Credits”
Snowflake charges in “credits,” which feels like play money. Select converts this to Dollars.
- It tells engineers: “This query cost you $14.50.”
- When people see real money, they start caring about waste.
Deep Integration
Select works with dbt, a popular data tool. This means engineers can see exactly which line of code caused a bill to go up.
Why DoiT Bought Select
DoiT is a large company that helps businesses manage cloud costs. They used to focus on reselling cloud services, but now they are building smart software to automate everything.
By buying Select, DoiT creates a complete package:
- Cloud Intelligence: Manages your main cloud (AWS/Google).
- PerfectScale: Manages your apps (Kubernetes).
- Select: Manages your data (Snowflake).
Now, customers can use one platform to control all their spending.
The Rise of “Data FinOps”
This deal proves that managing data costs is now its own industry, called Data FinOps.
- Different Rules: You can’t manage a data warehouse the same way you manage a virtual machine.
- Market Race: Big companies are racing to buy these tools. Just like Flexera bought Chaos Genius, DoiT bought Select. They all want to offer a “Single Pane of Glass” where you can see everything.
What Comes Next?
The future is automation.
- Less Manual Work: Systems will fix themselves. You set a budget, and the software makes sure you stay within it.
- AI Costs: As companies use more AI, costs will get even harder to track. Tools like Select are already preparing to track costs for AI models and queries.
Conclusion: This acquisition is great news for companies struggling with Snowflake bills. It means better tools are coming that don’t just show you the costs but actually help you lower them automatically.
