Azure is changing reserved VM options for several older series

Azure announced a retirement for one-year Reserved VM Instances for select VM series. Starting July 1, 2026, purchases and renewals for many older series won’t be available.

This is important for commitment planning. If your savings strategy relies on those reservations, you’ll need to adjust before the change takes effect.

The practical impact is that FinOps teams may need to revisit reservation terms and instance families. It’s a planning update more than a feature update, but it affects how you lock in savings going forward.

Azure makes durable workflows cheaper to run when they’re idle

Azure Functions Durable Task Scheduler Consumption SKU is now generally available. It uses pay-per-use pricing for durable workflows and AI agent orchestrations, with no idle capacity costs.

This is a strong FinOps update because it lines up cost with actual execution. If your workflows run intermittently, you’re no longer paying for always-on scheduler capacity.

That makes it a better fit for teams that want to avoid fixed infrastructure spend for bursty orchestration. It’s a straightforward way to keep workflow costs tied to usage.

Azure SQL now lets you right-size memory instead of overprovisioning

Azure SQL Business Critical Managed Instance now has a memory right-sizing preview. The update is meant to improve performance without forcing oversized memory allocations.

For FinOps teams, this is a direct cost-control lever. If memory has been padded “just in case,” right-sizing can help reduce waste while still supporting performance needs.

The benefit is more efficient instance sizing and the potential for savings on provisioned resources. That makes SQL capacity planning a little less blunt and a lot more precise.

Azure Elastic SAN snapshots are now incremental at the volume level

Azure Elastic SAN single-volume snapshots are generally available. The snapshots capture only changed blocks and stay in the SAN.

That’s useful for faster point-in-time backups and leaner storage usage. Since the snapshots are incremental, you don’t have to store a full copy every time.

The result is lower storage overhead and better recovery workflows for SAN-backed workloads. It’s a nice mix of protection and efficiency.
