Fiverr’s Karpenter Transformation
Fiverr recently transformed its infrastructure by migrating Kubernetes compute nodes to Karpenter. Here’s what you need to know:
Why the Change: Before, Fiverr used a third-party solution. It had several issues like manual updates, explicit specifications, and resource wastage.
Benefits of Karpenter: This tool offers dynamic resource allocation. It reduces waste by consolidating workloads. Additionally, it manages capacity and ensures compatibility.
Challenges Faced: Equal node distribution and aggressive bin-packing were issues. Fiverr used topology-spread to solve them.
Migration Process: Migrating involved deploying Karpenter and reducing third-party nodes. They moved one group at a time, starting with less critical ones.
Monitoring: Karpenter metrics are used to monitor performance. Importable Grafana dashboards help visualize these metrics.
Helm Template: This simplifies managing NodeGroups. It allows for defining global and local specifications per NodeGroup.

Migrating to Karpenter has greatly improved Fiverr’s operations.
Azure
Azure: Savings Plans vs. Reservations Explained
Here’s a simple breakdown of Azure savings plans and reservations:
Azure Savings Plans for Compute
Discounts: Save up to 65% on compute resources. Includes Azure VMs, App Services, and Azure Functions.
Flexibility: Use savings on multiple services and regions. Change scope at any time.
Commitment: Fixed hourly spending for 1 to 3 years. No cancellations or term changes.
Azure Reservations
Discounts: Save up to 72% for specific Azure resources. Ideal for stable, continuous workloads.
Predictability: Prepay for 1, 3, or 5-year usage. Target a particular Azure product and region.
Flexibility: Can exchange reservations but are limited to similar types. Can modify instance size within the same family.
Combining For Best Savings
Use reservations for predictable workloads.
Apply savings plans for dynamic or evolving needs.
Azure automatically applies the best discount first.
Understanding these options can drastically reduce your Azure costs.
AWS
13 to Optimize AWS API Gateway Cost
Nir Peleg shares essential strategies to reduce cloud spending on AWS API Gateway. Here’s a quick rundown:
Right API Type: Choose HTTP APIs for lower cost. REST APIs are pricier but offer more features.
Use Direct Integrations: Integrate AWS services directly. Skip using Lambda for data transfer.
Replace with ALB: Consider Application Load Balancer for scaling. ALB can be cost-effective if not using API Gateway features.
Many more strategies are available in the article.

Etsy’s FinOps GCP Optimization Journey
Etsy has detailed its comprehensive approach to improving cloud usage. After moving from an on-premise data center to Google Cloud in 2020, here’s what they did:
FinOps Team Formation
A dedicated FinOps team was created post-migration.
Positioned under the Chief Architect for independent optimization.
Forecasting Methodology:
Uses Cost Per Visit (CPV) metric for forecasting spend.
Costs are classified into Core Infrastructure, Machine Learning, Data Enablement, and Development.
Cost Detection and Mitigation:
Internal dashboards on BigQuery and Looker track costs and trends.
Weekly reviews with Finance to align actual costs with forecasts.
Swift identification and troubleshooting of cost increases.
Cost Optimization Wins:
GCS Storage Optimization: Improved monitoring and automation reduced usage.
Compute Optimization: Migrated infrastructure to more efficient platforms.
Network Compression: Enhanced network efficiency reduced costs and latency.
Etsy continues to innovate and optimize its cloud operations, aiming for greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
